Round 3 of the MBC 2008 season, proudly bought to you by EBB Mandurah, No Friends Clothing, UNITE, Nomad & Dunes went down in fun waist to chest high waves at Madora on Saturday the 21st of June. There were some cracking barrels and numerous ramps on offer for the forty plus competitors, which resulted in some very high wave scores and tight finals throughout all three divisions.
The A Division fielded its largest number of competitors for this year. The initial twelve competitors were trimmed down to the final four, with those who made the final all showing during their heats that they had what it takes to win the decider. Surfing in his first comp for the year, Brenden Gabel showed he has not lost it, taking home a closely fought 1st place. Gabel strung together numerous spin to roll combos to just edge out 2nd place getter Aiden Stampalia. Aiden surfed with his usual smooth style and launched a massive invert that earnt him an 8 point ride. He could not find that second high scoring wave and had to settle for 2nd place, half a point behind Gabel. Although he came close numerous times, Chad Abbott could not find the high scoring waves needed to place higher than 3rd. Chad launched a number of critical manoeuvres throughout the final but just could not stick the landings. Lane Stampalia could only manage 4th place after he looked to have run out of steam after posting a perfect 10-point ride in the Semi Final.
The guys in the B Division final were next out into the surf. The B Division final was once again action packed with the younger guys taking every opportunity to launch clear of the lip. Coming in 1st place was Cameron Dicks who has earnt himself a reputation for launching some massive airs. Cameron did not shy away in the final and threw himself at some of the bigger sets, launching some massive rolls out into the flats. George Humphries, not to be intimidated by Dicks’ aerial assault, utilised his smooth style to bust out numerous spin to roll combos that earnt him a very close 2nd place. Taking home 3rd position was Dylan Hands, who whilst in between tucking into some tasty barrels, also showed he has some mean skills on the knee. Coming into 4th place was the ever-consistent Davis Blackwell. Davis, as usual, surfed with a very tidy style and also launched himself into a few spin to roll combos
The C Grade final was the last one in the water. The guys in the C Grade final all surfed extremely well on their way to the final, with all of them progressing through numerous earlier heats. Taking part in his first comp for the year, Shaun Stoneman surfed extremely well to take home 1st place. Shaun surfed with an eye-catching style that should see him progressing up through the divisions very soon. 2nd place went to Ben Hardman who has improved with every heat he has surfed this year. He launched some huge rolls and tucked into a nice barrel in the final. 3rd place went to Margaret River charger Declan Genge. Declan showed that, whilst being used to bigger waves, he can mix it up in the smaller surf too. Coming in 4th place was Karl “Cowabunga” Mungar. The kid with the best hair in the world surfed very well in his first comp of the year, showing off his spinning skills on his way to 4th position.
