SIC Trialists Confirmed

The Trials were completed over the weekend and the following competitors will be entering the big event.

Wes Fischer (Sth Africa) 1st
Mitch Rawlins 2nd
Ben Gohl 3rd
Jonathon Vega (Canary Islands) 4th
Ryan Hardy
Brad Hughes
Chad Jackson
Jones Russell
Michael Chapple
Max Arent
Airam Cabrera (Canary Islands)
Charlie Chaplet (Re-Union Island)

Good to see Hardy back at it, and also WA getting good representation with Hughes and Jackson also getting through. It wont be the same without Kingy, Winny and Lester competing though.
Ah well, the waiting period starts tomorrow so tune into this website for the live feed of the comp. According to Ben Matson at Swellnet, the comp will probably get under way later this week and into the weekend as there is a decent pulse of swell due later this week.

Check the highlights of the trials below.

SIC Trials/No6 SIC

The No6 Brett Young Shark Island Trials start today and go on through to Sunday. There is a bit of swell around Cronulla at the moment so there should be some decent waves for them to compete in today and maybe tomorrow. There is only 1 ozzie (Ben Player) in the top 16, so fingers crossed a few of them (such as Rawlins, Hardy, Winchester etc etc) make it through the trials and into the final gig.
The SIC waiting period starts on the 1st of July, so not too much longer now. Keep your eyes on this website for live webcasts.

Heres some footage of last years SIC, which Ben Player won, to keep you entertained until this years challenge starts.

This is pretty hectic, some tourists were on a Shark boat i assume in South Africa when one of those jumping noahs decided to jump onto the boat. This is real by the way.

MBc Round 3 Results

Round 3 of the MBC 2008 season, proudly bought to you by EBB Mandurah, No Friends Clothing, UNITE, Nomad & Dunes went down in fun waist to chest high waves at Madora on Saturday the 21st of June. There were some cracking barrels and numerous ramps on offer for the forty plus competitors, which resulted in some very high wave scores and tight finals throughout all three divisions.

The A Division fielded its largest number of competitors for this year. The initial twelve competitors were trimmed down to the final four, with those who made the final all showing during their heats that they had what it takes to win the decider. Surfing in his first comp for the year, Brenden Gabel showed he has not lost it, taking home a closely fought 1st place. Gabel strung together numerous spin to roll combos to just edge out 2nd place getter Aiden Stampalia. Aiden surfed with his usual smooth style and launched a massive invert that earnt him an 8 point ride. He could not find that second high scoring wave and had to settle for 2nd place, half a point behind Gabel. Although he came close numerous times, Chad Abbott could not find the high scoring waves needed to place higher than 3rd. Chad launched a number of critical manoeuvres throughout the final but just could not stick the landings. Lane Stampalia could only manage 4th place after he looked to have run out of steam after posting a perfect 10-point ride in the Semi Final.

The guys in the B Division final were next out into the surf. The B Division final was once again action packed with the younger guys taking every opportunity to launch clear of the lip. Coming in 1st place was Cameron Dicks who has earnt himself a reputation for launching some massive airs. Cameron did not shy away in the final and threw himself at some of the bigger sets, launching some massive rolls out into the flats. George Humphries, not to be intimidated by Dicks’ aerial assault, utilised his smooth style to bust out numerous spin to roll combos that earnt him a very close 2nd place. Taking home 3rd position was Dylan Hands, who whilst in between tucking into some tasty barrels, also showed he has some mean skills on the knee. Coming into 4th place was the ever-consistent Davis Blackwell. Davis, as usual, surfed with a very tidy style and also launched himself into a few spin to roll combos

The C Grade final was the last one in the water. The guys in the C Grade final all surfed extremely well on their way to the final, with all of them progressing through numerous earlier heats. Taking part in his first comp for the year, Shaun Stoneman surfed extremely well to take home 1st place. Shaun surfed with an eye-catching style that should see him progressing up through the divisions very soon. 2nd place went to Ben Hardman who has improved with every heat he has surfed this year. He launched some huge rolls and tucked into a nice barrel in the final. 3rd place went to Margaret River charger Declan Genge. Declan showed that, whilst being used to bigger waves, he can mix it up in the smaller surf too. Coming in 4th place was Karl “Cowabunga” Mungar. The kid with the best hair in the world surfed very well in his first comp of the year, showing off his spinning skills on his way to 4th position.

MBC Round 3

The 3rd Round of the 2008 MBC season went down on the weekend in OK conditions at Madora. The 40+ competitors (including 12 year old groms, 50 something year old blokes, National champs, Nitro from the Shak and also a guy with possibly the COOLEST hair & name ever and everything and everyone in between, including Cetations) were greeted by some fairly straight waist/chest high waves, with a few crackers thrown in. There were some high scores (with the best being Lane Stampalia's perfect 10)and some very tight heats. Once again the finals were decided by only a few points, with most of the placings being split by half points.
The full comp write-up will be posted this arvo, along with a few pics from members such as Jackk Bunyan.
Look out for the Round 3 video, which is being put together by Miller Best and also the articles in the local newspapers.

Bali

Pretty easy too see why Bali has been cracking lately.

Looks like most flights are around the $700 mark at the moment, which is a bit steep, but with the aussie dollar getting you nearly 9000 rupee, the cheapness (even more than usual) of living will make up for the flight. There are some cheaper deals around though so check them out. Make sure you check out this website for reports, pics & vids from Slim.

Alex Halsey

Check out the Vid below of current National Champ Alex Halsey at the Wedge. Alex hails from Perth and has only been surfing for a few years. Currently sponsored by MBC major sponsors EBB Mandurah and also Rheopaipo. Safe to say he rips.

Cracking South, Pros & More Pros

There have been more Pros in WA this week just gone than i think you would even see at a Pro Comp. The SW pretty much cranked all week last week with some pretty sweet sessions going down at Box, North Point, Cobbles, Gas and pretty much everywhere. Wedge was apparently decent early in the week too. Check out C&T for more & check out the pic by Chris Scaddan of Mitch Rawlins at the Wedge.

MBC Round 1 Video

The video below was filmed, edited and produced by Jack Bunyan. It is a short vid of our Round 1 comp held at Singoes in April. We had pretty average conditions, with the waves only pushing the waist high mark and some pretty straight banks but the guys all surfed well in the trying conditions.

Shittest Movie Ever Continued...Best Line Ever

Continuing on from that post about possibly the worst movie ever, here comes another bit of priceless footage from the same pile. This would have to be one of, no probably THE best pickup line in any movie, EVER. Subtle hey. Go and pick up the vid from the crap section at your local video store, you will get some entertainment out of it, i promise. Check the review here

Possibly the Shittest Movie Ever

Shark Attack 3:Megalodon is probably the worst movie ever. However, it is so bad in parts that it actually becomes rather funny & entertaining. Fingers crossed there isnt a shark this big swimming around somewhere.

SIC Live

The site for the live feed of the 2008 SIC has gone live. View it here.
The comp doesnt start until the 1st of July so up until then check out the vid below for some footage from last years SIC.

Wedge

As most of you know or have heard, the Wedge has been pretty good this year. Have a look at these beauties to see what its been like. Pretty sure the top pic is of Adam Luehman and the other rider, well, i have no idea. If anyone knows who it is get in touch. Pics by Chris Scaddan.

Groyne Love

I know it features stand-ups again, but check out the waves peeling off this groyne. Imagine if City's, Floreat, or heck, even 4th's got even half as good as this??? Check out how long Kelly Slater gets slotted for.

Something New-Expedition

Some boogers in the US have come up with a pretty unique competition format. It takes hints from the Isolated Challenge that takes place in NZ and goes a few steps further. Basically there were 13 riders, split into 3 divisions who all went on a week long surf trip through Baja Mexico. All of their surfs were filmed and then the footage was uploaded to this website, where the winner was judged from. Pretty sweet idea if you ask me. You can see the promo for last years comp below.

Kelly Slater/Mike Stewart

You are probably thinking to yourself that i have gone mad because i am writing about a stand-up in a bodyboarding blog. Well your wrong, i havn't lost my marbles, Kelly Slater is just THAT GOOD that he warrants a piece on any site that deals with "surfing". The 36 year old & 8X world champ has just won another comp, the Globe Pro in Fiji. He has currently won 3 out of the 4 comps this year and is doing pretty well for someone who supposedly retired at the end of last year and was only going to surf a few select events this year. Check out the vid below from the recent Globe Fiji Pro

As you can see Kelly Slater is to Stand-up what Mike Stewart is to bodyboarding. So to keep this post even i have included a vid of the Godfather himself on the boogie.

As well as surfing as well as he does, Mike has a number of innovative designs coming out of his Science label. He is currently in the process of developing the Alaia model, made from wood, that looks like the original bodyboards/paipos. He has also introduced the new compression cells, that absorb impact, into the new Science 1 LTD. Check out all the new innovations at his website.

Funkshen Goodies

The guys at Funkshen are currently running a winter special on all custom boards. Nosebulbs, hip grooves, mesh and a T-Shirt are all thrown in free on all customs at the moment. Get those orders in quick!

Round 3 Re-Schedule

Round 3 of the MBC season that was due to run this weekend, the 7th/8th of June, has been re-scheduled over to next weekend, the 14th/15th of June.
The forecast for this weekend is looking pretty rubbish, with a 1m swell at best, so i've decided to re-schedule in the hope of better conditions next weekend.

Portugal

This is pretty old news but i dont think many of you would have seen this footage. The footage below was taken in Portugal, late last year, during a Nazare bodyboarding competition. As you can see it was rather large..... Keen to hold a MBC comp in these conditions guys???

Ireland

The rather average & extremely crowded surf today reminded exactly why i was loving it in Ireland at this exact time last year. Cold water, empty lineups, a lack of noahs and warm Guinness. Sounds & looks good ey?

McGill V Warne.... No Contest

Stuart McGill has finally decided to give it a rest & go back to his vineyard. This news alone made up for the lack of quality surf today. Bring back Warnie!!!
