MBC Needs Your Help

WE NEED TO FIND SOME PEOPLE TO RUN THE CLUB NEXT YEAR. I cannot do it next year so we need to find a bunch of people who are willing to help out with the club, both with the admin stuff and also running the comp days.
If we cannot find anyone willing to do it, the club will fold. There are no other clubs in WA so that means no comps for you guys, anywhere, other than states.

So, get onto your parents, the best way would be to have a group of parents willing to do it, who could take it in turns running comp days and then come together to do the admin stuff.

Please contact me on mandurahbodyboardclub@hotmail.com OR ralfanator@hotmail.com if you are keen, if you know someone that may be or you have any questions.

Round 5 Pics

MBC Round 5 Results- A Bit Late

Round 5 of the MBC 2008 season, presented by EBB Mandurah, No Friends Clothing, UNITE, Nomad & Dunes went down in waist to chest high waves at Singleton on Saturday the 9th of August. The waves were pretty average for competition bodyboarding but all the competitors tried hard and busted out as best they could.

The A Division final was the first final into the water. Chad Abbott surfed extremely well to take out his third 1st placing for the year. Chad utilising his many years of local knowledge snuck into a few good barrels on his way to the win. This gives him an almost unassailable lead of the A Division & Club Champion awards heading into the final round of competition. Coming in a close 2nd place was Lane Stampalia. Lane stroked into a few tidy barrels during the heat and managed to combine these with some big rolls and inverts. Following very closely behind Land in 3rd place was his brother Aiden Stampalia. Aiden, like usual, surfed with a very smooth style and showed off some very powerful forward and reverse spins. Taking home 4th place was Aiden Price who was competing in his first comp for the year. Aiden busted a few big rolls but could not find the high scoring waves he needed to place higher than 4th.

The guys in the B Division final once again surfed with a great deal of skill and explosiveness during the final. Taking home 1st place was George Humphries who picked off the bigger bombs and surfed them with a great deal of skill, executing numerous powerful spins and rolls on his scoring waves. 2nd place went to Mr Consistent Cameron Dicks. Cameron has placed in every comp this year and looks like he may challenge for the B Division Title. Like usual Cameron launched numerous large rolls clear of the lip in taking out 2nd place. 3rd place went to the recently crowned State Champion, Calvin Best. Calvin showed why he is the State Champ with some committed moves off the bigger closeout sets. 4th place went to Davis Blackwell who as usual surfed with a butter smooth style. Davis could not find the high scoring waves needed in the final to place higher than 4th.

The C Grade final was the last one in the water. Taking out 1st place with a dominant display was Jake Ellis. Jake returned from B to C Grade for this comp and his improvement was on show for all to see. Jake carved some very powerful reverses on the way to 1st place. Taking out 2nd place was Declan Genge. Declan has shown a steady improvement this year and this showed with some high scoring rolls. The Margaret River charger could be in with a chance of taking out the C Grade Division with some very consistent showings in the last few rounds. 3rd and 4th place had to be split with the Official MBC Count-Back. Karl Mungar and Scott Spencer scored exactly the same wave scores and could not be split on count-back so the Official MBC Count-Back system was called in to split them. Karl took home 3rd place after successfully beating Scott on the Best of 3, Rock-Paper-Scissors Official MBC Count-Back system.

The Winner of the inaugural $50 ExpressSesh was Lane Stampalia who busted out a massive invert in the hour long ExpressSesh. There was some pretty amazing surfing that went down during the ExpressSesh, with many riders looking to the future with numerous flip variations whilst many looked to the past for inspiration with some sweet take off rolls, reverse rolls and rollercoaster riding.

MBC Round 5

Round 5 will be going ahead this Saturday the 9th of August.

There will be light offshores & the swell should be around the 2/3m mark so there should be some fun waist/chest high waves.

If you want to compete you need to get your $10 comp fee into EBB Mandurah by 5pm Friday arvo (or contact me by then). There will be no late entries.

Meet @ EBB Mandurah car park at 7am Saturday morning.

Hoodies are being printed this week so i should have them to you by next week, fingers crossed. Sorry for the delay guys but the gas shortage pretty much stopped all the printers in Perth so they have been on hold for about a month now.

Arica Chilean Challenge

As you can see the Arica Challenge has been going down in some cracking conditions. There are still a bunch of Aussies in the draw, including Ben Player, Ryan Hardy, Winny, Rawlins and Showell. Check out IBA for live coverage

Beyond Industries

Beyond Industries is a local WA based clothing company that will be putting some sweet looking threads in the shops this Summer. Owner & designer, Sam Kerr, is a local bodyboarder so make sure you get behind him when his stuff hits the shelves.

Brendan Newton Retires

Im dissapointed but as the the title reads, yes, Brenden Newton has retired from being a Pro Bodyboarder. Hopefully he made the decision based on wanting to do something else rather than money problems etc.
I hope that we will see him back in the big stuff again one day.

Unlucky

I feel pretty sorry for you guys that are in Bali at the moment. There is a cracking swell running & you cant surf at Uluwatu or Padang due to the standups holding the Rip Curl Search comp there. Rip Curl have outdone themselves this year, they have searched far and wide for new and remote waves, didnt find any, so went to a 3rd world country, threw buckets of money at them, remove all the surfers from the water for around 2 weeks and run a comp for 40 guys who could all probably buy the island themselves with the amount of money they earn from sponsorships.

Unlucky guys, hopefully Bingin/Impossibles is OK. Thats if they arnt fenced off too

EBB Pro

Well the EBB Pro went down in some pretty fun beachies down at Smiths last weekend. Coming out on top was Michael Novy. Winny came in 2nd, with Hardy placing 3rd. Local Ben Delfs who you can see busting a rather massive backflip in the pic above ripped it up all day but couldnt push higher than 4th in the final.
The DK was taken out by Trent Sanford (big DK turn above), with Kim Feast 2nd, Mark Boehm 3rd and Liam OKeefe 4th.

States got blow out, so it has been re-scheduled for this Sunday back up @ Scarbs again.

Relations

A few more pics from Chris Scaddan featuring cousins Ryan Donavon (pic 1 and DK in pic 3) and Shaun Stoneman (pic 2 and dropping in pic 3). Both guys surf really well and pretty much look exactly the same in the surf, hence the reason i did not recognise either.

MBC ROUND 4 Results

Round 4 of the MBC 2008 season, proudly presented by UNITE went down in the best conditions of the year at Singleton on Sunday the 20th of July. The thirty plus competitors were initially greeted by a very cold & misty beach that upon clearing revealed some very fun waist to chest high waves with some bigger head high sets. The big blow during the week had formed some really nice banks that offered up numerous barrels and ramps for all competitors. The quality of the waves allowed for a very high level of surfing with all finals being extremely close and numerous 10 point rides being awarded.

The C Grade final was the first one in the water. Impressing in only his 2nd competition, Brendan Clark took home 1st place. Brendan launched off everything that came his way during the heat. He landed numerous big rolls but topped it all off with an 8 point invert. Coming in a close 2nd place was Scott Spencer, also in his 2nd comp, who showed off his smooth style with a couple of spin to roll combos. Coming in 3rd place was Mr Consistency Ben Harman. Ben has placed in every comp this year so looks like a good chance of taking out the C division championship. Once again Ben landed some big rolls and managed to sneak into a little barrel in the final. 4th place went to Margaret River man Declan Genge, who looked a little more comfortable in the bigger surf on offer. Declan attempted a few ARS’ during the final but could just not stick the landing.

The guys in the B Division final were next out into the surf. The B Division final was once again action packed with the younger guys taking every opportunity to launch clear of the lip. The heat proved to be the closest final all year with 2nd through to 4th place having to be separated by a count back. Coming in a clear 1st place once again was Cameron Dicks. Cameron, like usual, took every opportunity to launch well clear of the lip with some massive rolls and inverts. 2nd place on count back went to Chris Steffaneti who surfed with a butter smooth style. Chris’ reverse spins were very powerful and this combined with some neat roll combos handed him 2nd place. Unlucky in 3rd place was Calvin Galbraith. Calvin managed to sneak into a few small barrels during his heat but was extremely unlucky to lose out on a count back decision. George Humphries like usual surfed with a lot of power for one so small. He managed to string together a few spin to roll combos but like the other two had to settle for a count back decision to determine final placings.

The A Division was the last final into the water. The level of surfing in the semi finals was amazing and this continued into the final where two 10 point rides (to go along with the 2 from the semis) were handed out. Competing in his first MBC comp for the year, Ryan Hands made up for lost time, taking home 1st place with a combined wave total of 18 out of 20. Ryan picked off one of the bigger sets, rode the barrel for a few seconds before launching a massive invert out into the flats. That ride earnt him 10 points. His second scoring wave, an 8 pointer was another long barrel followed by a big ARS. Brenden Gabel followed closely behind in 2nd place. Brenden surfed numerous high scoring waves, the highlight being a long barrel to massive roll, which earnt him 8 points. Coming in 3rd place was Aiden Stampalia who as usual surfed with an extremely smooth style. Aiden managed to score a 10 point invert in the final (and also in the semi final) but could not find the other high scoring wave needed in the final to place higher. Coming in 4th place was Dylan Brand who managed to string a few spin to roll combos together but could not get the bigger set waves needed to place higher.

MBC ROUND 4

George Humphries

George Humphries on a cracker

Well Round 4 went down in the best conditions we have had this year. There was a consistent swell and light offshores for the whole comp. Waves were around the waist/chest mark with a few bigger sets thrown in (when we could actually see them through the mist) with good shape for the whole comp. I will post results later but to keep you tied over until then here are some pics taken by Chris Scaddan.

The EBB Pro and 3rd Round of States that is to be held next weekend (25th-27th July) will now be held at the Yallingup end of the South West Cape rather than down in the Gas Bay area.

Donks

Hey guys i would recommend having a look at Donks' blog. He is a sick surf photog from West Oz but lately has been spending time over in some of the worlds conflict zones, mainly in the Middle East taking some pics to show the world what is occuring there (like the one above). Very ballsy and congrats to him for following his dreams. Stay Safe Donks

Dodgy

The pic above is of a dodgy fishing boat that has run aground at the take off zone at Padang reef, one of the best reefs in Indo and perhaps the world.
All the crew bailed and ran off onto the mainland and left the boat and its contents (illegally taken fish) to the locals. Safe to say there isnt much left on the boat as its all been taken by the locals who im sure will put it to good use.
There is a fair bit of oil and diesel leaking from the boat, so hopefully it doesnt affect the area too much.
It doesnt appear to have affected the waves too much though as the local Padang comp was still going down.

Round 4 presented by UNITE this Sunday

MBC Round 4 presented by UNITE will be held this Sunday the 20th of July.

$10 comp fee needs to be into EBB Mandurah by 12 lunchtime on Saturday. NO LATE ENTRIES will be taken. If the $10 comp fee is not into EBB Mandurah or i have not been called/msgd by 12 lunchtime on Saturday you will not be competing.

Meet @ EBB Mandurah 7am on Sunday morning.

Expect consistent waist/chest high waves with a few bigger sets (head/head+) thrown in for good measure. There will be light offshore winds pretty much all day too so all up a pretty good day for a comp.

All division place getters will receive UNITE clothing.

Ben Player #1

Ben Player has taken out the SIC for the 2nd time in a row over the weekend. Coming in a very close 2nd was Ryan Hardy, 3rd went to Sth African Marc Mcarthy with John Showell placing 4th. The comp was held in rubbish conditions (thats putting it lightly, put it this way, every MBC Round this year has had better waves) with mushy knee/waist high waves running accross the Island.
Anyway, that puts BP right in the running for his 3rd World title, so good luck to him.
There are two comps over in Sth America, then 3 in Europe in the next few months so hopefully BP and Hardy can keep surfing well & bring another world title to Oz.

The 2nd Round of the WA States went down in pretty epic conditions last weekend. Sunday had some cracking waves at Scarbs with some pretty high scores going down. There were a few competitors from the club that went up and most of them surfed really well and came home with placings.

Best Time of the Year

Seeing as though its my birthday today i thought i will post something about me. This time of year, for me, is the best time of the year. The San Fermin Festival is about to start over in Pamplona, Basque country, Spain and the bulls are going to start charging down those streets from the 7th of July. This time last year i was there and was lucky (stupid???) enough to run in one of the runs on the 8th of July. I was cruising the net when i found the picture above, from last year, and spotted what looks to be myself over near the wall. Not 100% sure it is me but im gonna claim it anyway.
Anyway if you get the chance to get over there and run, do it, you wont regret it.

States

States are this weekend up at Scarborough. There will be some decent swell this weekend so there should be some pretty good competition going down. There are a number of MBC members competing including Chad Abbott, Brendan Gabel, Ryan Hands, Dylan Hands, Davis Blackwell, George Humphries, Dylan Brand and a few others (sorry if i have not put your name down). So if you have some spare time on the weekend, why not get down there and check it out. Sunday lunchtime and arvo is looking the goods at the moment so hopefully the finals will be run then.

SIC Trialists Confirmed

The Trials were completed over the weekend and the following competitors will be entering the big event.

Wes Fischer (Sth Africa) 1st
Mitch Rawlins 2nd
Ben Gohl 3rd
Jonathon Vega (Canary Islands) 4th
Ryan Hardy
Brad Hughes
Chad Jackson
Jones Russell
Michael Chapple
Max Arent
Airam Cabrera (Canary Islands)
Charlie Chaplet (Re-Union Island)

Good to see Hardy back at it, and also WA getting good representation with Hughes and Jackson also getting through. It wont be the same without Kingy, Winny and Lester competing though.
Ah well, the waiting period starts tomorrow so tune into this website for the live feed of the comp. According to Ben Matson at Swellnet, the comp will probably get under way later this week and into the weekend as there is a decent pulse of swell due later this week.

Check the highlights of the trials below.

SIC Trials/No6 SIC

The No6 Brett Young Shark Island Trials start today and go on through to Sunday. There is a bit of swell around Cronulla at the moment so there should be some decent waves for them to compete in today and maybe tomorrow. There is only 1 ozzie (Ben Player) in the top 16, so fingers crossed a few of them (such as Rawlins, Hardy, Winchester etc etc) make it through the trials and into the final gig.
The SIC waiting period starts on the 1st of July, so not too much longer now. Keep your eyes on this website for live webcasts.

Heres some footage of last years SIC, which Ben Player won, to keep you entertained until this years challenge starts.
