MBC ROUND 4 Results

Round 4 of the MBC 2008 season, proudly presented by UNITE went down in the best conditions of the year at Singleton on Sunday the 20th of July. The thirty plus competitors were initially greeted by a very cold & misty beach that upon clearing revealed some very fun waist to chest high waves with some bigger head high sets. The big blow during the week had formed some really nice banks that offered up numerous barrels and ramps for all competitors. The quality of the waves allowed for a very high level of surfing with all finals being extremely close and numerous 10 point rides being awarded.

The C Grade final was the first one in the water. Impressing in only his 2nd competition, Brendan Clark took home 1st place. Brendan launched off everything that came his way during the heat. He landed numerous big rolls but topped it all off with an 8 point invert. Coming in a close 2nd place was Scott Spencer, also in his 2nd comp, who showed off his smooth style with a couple of spin to roll combos. Coming in 3rd place was Mr Consistency Ben Harman. Ben has placed in every comp this year so looks like a good chance of taking out the C division championship. Once again Ben landed some big rolls and managed to sneak into a little barrel in the final. 4th place went to Margaret River man Declan Genge, who looked a little more comfortable in the bigger surf on offer. Declan attempted a few ARS’ during the final but could just not stick the landing.

The guys in the B Division final were next out into the surf. The B Division final was once again action packed with the younger guys taking every opportunity to launch clear of the lip. The heat proved to be the closest final all year with 2nd through to 4th place having to be separated by a count back. Coming in a clear 1st place once again was Cameron Dicks. Cameron, like usual, took every opportunity to launch well clear of the lip with some massive rolls and inverts. 2nd place on count back went to Chris Steffaneti who surfed with a butter smooth style. Chris’ reverse spins were very powerful and this combined with some neat roll combos handed him 2nd place. Unlucky in 3rd place was Calvin Galbraith. Calvin managed to sneak into a few small barrels during his heat but was extremely unlucky to lose out on a count back decision. George Humphries like usual surfed with a lot of power for one so small. He managed to string together a few spin to roll combos but like the other two had to settle for a count back decision to determine final placings.

The A Division was the last final into the water. The level of surfing in the semi finals was amazing and this continued into the final where two 10 point rides (to go along with the 2 from the semis) were handed out. Competing in his first MBC comp for the year, Ryan Hands made up for lost time, taking home 1st place with a combined wave total of 18 out of 20. Ryan picked off one of the bigger sets, rode the barrel for a few seconds before launching a massive invert out into the flats. That ride earnt him 10 points. His second scoring wave, an 8 pointer was another long barrel followed by a big ARS. Brenden Gabel followed closely behind in 2nd place. Brenden surfed numerous high scoring waves, the highlight being a long barrel to massive roll, which earnt him 8 points. Coming in 3rd place was Aiden Stampalia who as usual surfed with an extremely smooth style. Aiden managed to score a 10 point invert in the final (and also in the semi final) but could not find the other high scoring wave needed in the final to place higher. Coming in 4th place was Dylan Brand who managed to string a few spin to roll combos together but could not get the bigger set waves needed to place higher.
